I have a natural ability to help people with the difficulties and challenges they face and it is this that inspired me to take a turn in my career and become a counsellor/therapist. Having had experience of personal counselling I have also acknowledged the positive benefits and clarity that counselling can provide.
I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and offer an integrative approach to counselling. This means that I adopt a range of approaches in order to suit an individual client and their needs, in particular I tend to use a ‘person-centred’ approach. I believe that every person is unique and will react differently with life’s challenges, therefore an approach that suits one client may not necessary suit another, and this is where an integrative approach can be ideal.
I am also a therapist providing Animal Assisted Interventions with my therapy dog Fudge. Having Fudge present generally enhances wellbeing as well as the opportunity to work towards specific outcomes, this can be offered within counselling sessions as well as within a therapy of its own. Dogs can offer not only companionship, but other endless therapeutic benefits. Evidence shows that children and adults, with emotional, social, learning or behavioural difficulties can benefit from the presence and interaction with dogs. Dogs have the ability to listen attentively without judgement or disclsoure, whilst at the same time demonstrating their love and loyalty.
My professional qualifications include:
- Postgraduate diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP accredited course).
- BSc Social sciences (Hons) with Psychological Studies (Open).
- The Samaritans initial training.
- SCAS Companion animal interventions in therapeutic practice.
- Guide dog trainer training programme
- Guide dog mobility assistant training programme
- Open University SK124 Understanding the Autism Spectrum
I am a registered member of the BACP and adhere to their code of ethics and principles. When working with Fudge I adhere to SCAS Animal Assisted Interventions code of practice. I am also registered with the information commissioners office. I attend regular supervision, hold full public liability insurance as well as an enhanced DBS certificate.
