Counselling is a talking Therapy whereby difficult feelings and emotions are explored In depth in order to work towards positive change. Animal Assisted Therapy on the other hand can be complementary to or independent of counselling. It tends to be much more goal orientated with theraputic outcomes being central to the Therapy. It can be described as a ‘hands on’ and creative form of Therapy due to the interactions with the animal. This, for some, can make it less intense than other forms of Therapy. It can be particularly useful for working on specific areas such as developing confidence and self esteem, developing empathy, enhancing self care, etc as well as contributing to general health and wellbeing.
How is confidentiality managed?
Trust is a very important part of the relationship between client and therapist. Everything that is brought to the session will remain confidential unless any of the following apply:
- The client gives written consent to pass on information.
- A court order is received requiring information to be disclosed.
- Information is passed in relation to terrorism.
- Whereby the client appears to be in danger to themselves or other people.
However if confidential information is disclosed you will be informed of this prior to the disclosure wherever possible. At the start of therapy you will be asked to sign a form to confirm that you have agreed to this confidentiality contract.
What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?
From time to time, things crop up meaning you may need to cancel your appointment. I ask for a 24 hour cancellation notice. If this is not made I may charge for the cost of the session. This not only protects the counsellor but also your commitment to the process.
